Since 1995, The Post-Crescent has been working in collaboration with fellow community leaders to ensure that families across the region are food secure during the holiday season. In 2010, our collaborative commitment to our community expanded to 10 USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin markets.
Ever since then, USA TODAY NETWORK – Wisconsin and its partners have raised over $4 million for food pantries across the state. The powerful legacy of Stock the Shelves would not be what it is without the commitment of our friends and neighbors.
Food insecurity impacts people of all backgrounds in all neighborhoods. With the cost of living higher than what most wages pay, Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed (ALICE) families work hard and earn above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) - but not enough to afford a basic household budget of housing, child care, food, transportation and health care.
Studies show that families who only have access to inexpensive, unhealthy foods often suffer from poor health and obesity. They also tend to be less productive workers or students – all of which result in an increased demand for health care in the long run. Families that suffer from a lack of food experience poor daily functioning, as well as an increased future need for social services and health care.
The number of Wisconsinites in need is staggering:
Households below FPL 289,209
Households below ALICE threshold 670,922
Total Economically Insecure Households 960,131
Total Percentage of Wisconsin Households 42%
Fortunately, Wisconsinites are eager to show up for their neighbors when they need a hand. That’s why it’s no surprise readers like you have so closely connected with the Stock the Shelves message, and responded to our annual calls to action.
Stock the Shelves continues to be a strong program that effectively feeds thousands of children and families across Wisconsin’s 10 markets. Please join us to make 2018 the strongest yet!
