One can only imagine the gorilla Sheboygan North would have become in the early 1980s had Joe Wolf continued his education in Sheboygan instead of transferring to Kohler after the third grade.
Wolf, the greatest high school player in Wisconsin history, began his schooling at Holy Name on Sheboygan's North Side. There, he did not attend the same school as Chip Simenz, Eric Portman, Paul Farrelly and Rob Dassow, but he would have anchored North's starting lineup with them his senior year had he continued to attend Sheboygan schools.
"With Farrelly as our point, we would have been pretty good," said Wolf, an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Like the 6-foot-11 Wolf, the 6-5 Simenz and 6-8 Portman became Division 1 college players and, athletically and fundamentally, clearly outclassed most of their high school contemporaries.
As coach Tom Desotell elevated Simenz and Portman to the varsity their sophomore years, it's conceivable a Wolf-led Golden Raiders team might have won three Class A state titles and been crowned Wisconsin's No. 1 prep dynasty of all-time.
