'Vaudeville' coming to local stage

For the Marshfield News-Herald

STEVENS POINT -- The Center Point Chorus of Sweet Adelines will present "A Night of Vaudeville" at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Theater @1800.

Tickets are $12 for adults, and $10 for seniors and students. Children age 6 and younger will be admitted free of charge. Tickets may be purchased from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Box Office, 715-346-4100 or from any Sweet Adeline member.

Show chairwoman Shannon Steinbach suggested a vaudeville theme this year, reaching out to the community for acts to take the audience back to the heyday of the 1900s. And so it has unfolded. Nine vaudeville acts on the program include a dog act, a magic show, a juggler, and a stump fiddle routine. Unique will be "The Bottle Caps" performing on 21 bottles pitched to "It is Well With my Soul." Members of the bottle trio are Jenny Burton from the Burton Suzuki Studio and her adult assistants, Desiah Melby and Sarah Abbot-Beversdorf.

And what is vaudeville without dancing? Sam Nolte will tap to Glenn Miller's "In the Mood." Sam is a junior dance major at UWSP. She is a tap instructor through UWSP Continuing Education, and a tap, jazz, and hip hop instructor at Turning Point Dance Academy. Jim and Lenore Haferman will demonstrate their version of "Dancing with the Stars" with a fox trot.

Eric Riskus, a professional juggler, will show off his skill using balls, rings, scarves, and the Chinese yo-yo. Returning this year as an audience favorite will be the Center Point Sweetetts, girls ranging from four to eleven years, singing the "Cohen Medley." Shirlee Shaw, in the guise of Dolly Pardon, will give her rendition of "I Will Always Love You."

Showcased this year is guest quartet, Capri from the Harbor City Music Company in Odenton, Md. The women sing four-part harmony barbershop style, and continue to gain the admiration of competition judges. In the recent Sweet Adeline international competition in Nashville Tenn., Capri placed sixth out of 52 competing quartets from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. Capri was less than 200 points from first place medalists Zing who scored 3,280 points. In addition to their ability to "ring those chords," Capri drew comments of "entertaining, stylish, and nice to look at." Capri has been singing together for ten years and has five top ten international finishes out of five international appearances. For the last two years, Capri has captured the Audience Choice award.

Quartets from the ranks of the Center Point Chorus are: ShortNSassy with "San Francisco Bay Blues" and Sheer Happiness with "Bill Bailey." A Very Large Quartet will sing "Java Jive." The Center Point Chorus of Sweet Adelines, under the direction of Roger and Kathleen Harris, will sing during the first half of the show and at the finale.

Brother and sister emcees, Corey Madson and Cassie (Madson) Jones, will keep the show moving with jokes typical of vaudeville. Bob Lane is the show director, and Charlie Crandall the stage manager. Robin Madson wrote the script.

An Afterglow where Capri and other quartets will continue to entertain will follow the show at Harmony House, 3500 Harmony Lane.
