JUNEAU — Jail time has been ordered for a Theresa man accused of stealing from a church and damaging vending machines in a local Laundromat.
Dodge County Circuit Court Judge John Storck sentenced James E. Hartmann to 120 days in jail on charges of theft, criminal damage to property and bail jumping.
In addition, Hartmann was ordered to pay restitution to the Theresa Laundromat and not to go on the premises of the Laundromat, St. Theresa Church or Widmer Cheese.
He was also ordered to spend 18 months on probation.
On April 17, 2008, Dodge County Sheriff's deputies were called to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 113 E. Bonduel St., Theresa, for the report of a theft.
The pastor told police that Hartmann had broken into the church and was about to leave with a potted plant in his hand, according to the criminal complaint.
Through the investigation, it was learned that Hartmann had been to the church numerous times in the past trying to solicit money from church members on Sunday mornings, the complaint states.
Hartmann told police that he had gone to the church in an attempt to get money in order to do his laundry.
The Theresa man also admitted to damaging a candy machine in the local Laundromat earlier that morning, according to the complaint.
