Traveling Vietnam memorial in Medford Wednesday

Wausau Daily Herald

MEDFORD — A half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be on the grounds of Medford Area Middle School this week.

The replica, known as The Wall That Heals, will be open to the public at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday after a Veteran’s Day ceremony.

About 500 student-made banners will also be on display next to the wall. Each laminated construction paper banner features a picture and biographical information of a Wisconsin veteran killed in the Vietnam War.

Medford Middle School students began creating the banners in 2007 under the direction of social studies teacher Bryce Kelley. Kelley wants to create a banner for every one of the 1,159 Wisconsin Vietnam War dead.

The wall will be open to visitors 24 hours a day on Medford Area Middle School grounds, 509 East Clark St., through the 4 p.m. closing ceremony on Sunday.
