Margaret Eualah Baker-Novitske died on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Woodlands Senior Park, Fond du Lac.
She was 95 years old.
A lifetime resident of Fond du Lac, she was an active participant and supporter of many local and statewide organizations.
She was born on March 27, 1914, in Fond du Lac, a daughter of Harry D. and Eualah Nast Treleven.
Margaret attended Ripon College and received a bachelor's degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1935. She continued her studies at Northwestern University and Peabody Teacher's College. For many years, she taught English and Latin at L.P. Goodrich High School. She retired in 1976.
Active in the Fond du Lac County Historical Society, she served as its president in the 1960's, she played a major role in acquiring the Galloway family home and other vintage buildings, and helped develop the village as a major local tourist attraction of the Fond du Lac Historical Society. She also served as chair of two state history associations.
In 1961, Margaret was the Worthy Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star for the State of Wisconsin. A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fond du Lac, she was also a member of the American Association of University Women and Daughters of the American Revolution. Following her retirement from teaching, Margaret served several terms on the Fond du Lac County Board of Supervisors.
She was an avid reader and traveler, and with her teacher friends she visited many foreign countries to study their culture and history. She loved quilting, gardening, and antiquing.
She is survived by a daughter, Jane L. Baker of Evanston, Ill.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three husbands, John L. Kaestner, Elmer F. Baker, and A.J. "Al" Novitske; a daughter, Margie E. Baker; a brother; and two sisters.
Services: The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church, 1225 Fourth Street. The Rev. Anthony J. Farina will officiate. Burial will be at Rienzi Cemetery.
Visitation: The family will greet friends and relatives at church from 11 a.m. until the time of services at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to First Presbyterian Church and the Fond du Lac County Historical Society.
