The last golf day at Maxwelton Braes was Saturday. Many loyal folks came out to golf in the rainy, cold weather. People didn't care — after all, it was the last chance of the season and the last time for Maxwelton Braes to be what it is supposed to be — a fun place to golf, dine and to have a good time. And we always did. There were always golf leagues going on, weddings, anniversaries, holiday parties, Green Bay Packers parties, Pickleball games, bridge games and even Mah jong games. The venerable old golf resort fell into financial difficulties, as many have during these difficult times. Who knows what will happen to the facility in the future, but I know so many of us want to say "thank you" Maxwelton Braes for being a great host. We will miss you.

Fall harvest dinner
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Baileys Harbor will hold its fall harvest dinner from 4:30 to 7 tonight. The chicken and meatball dinner will be served family-style. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for ages 6 to 12. Tickets are available at the door.
Veterans Day
Wednesday is Veterans Day. If you have a friend or family member who served in the armed forces, take a moment to tell them thank you. We all owe them a lot. A number of national firms have programs to thank the veterans. One of those firms is the restaurant chain, Applebee's, which has a restaurant in Sturgeon Bay. Veterans and active-duty military will eat free at Applebee's with proof of service. Proof can be as simple as a picture of you in uniform.
Halloween party
The Halloween party for all the little ghosts and goblins went very well last week. I didn't count, but there must have been more than 65 children partying at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall. They sure tired out all of the volunteers, along with their parents. The favorite game of the night was the bowling alley set up with ghostly pins, and second was the beanbag game. Apple cider, cookies, lots of candy and, of course, many prizes were given out to all the happy children. Everyone had a great time. A big thank-you to Sharon Brungraber, Michelle Palmer, Pat Palmer, Barb Isaackson of the Baileys Harbor Community Association and the other volunteers whose efforts that made the Town Hall look so spooky and fun.
Cancer talk
The Health & Wellness Cabinet of the Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay will present an informative talk on breast cancer and cancer programs in Wisconsin. The talk will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at the church. Speaker will be Kris Miller, cancer survivor and representative of the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Coalition. She has attended numerous educational conferences and training sessions. Come and bring a friend. The presentations are always open to the public and free of charge.
Smoke-free hours
The Coyote Roadhouse in Baileys Harbor recently went smoke-free for daytime and dinner hours. Smoking is now permitted only at night after the kitchen closes. According to state law, all public restaurants and bars will be totally smoke-free beginning in July.
See you next time on this side of the Door.
