Crafting the fine art of writing

First-graders in Mrs. Brost's class at Evergreen Elementary are learning the fine art of writing. They have been working on choosing ideas, sounding out words and making spaces between the words. They also learned about capital letters and punctuation.

Most ideas come from the best place of all, their own lives.

"I like drawing pictures, and it's fun because I get to write about what I like," Max said.

First-graders are really good at telling stories. Now, they tell those stories in writing to share with others. To share the young authors' writing, they use an Elmo projector and an overhead screen. This allows all students to see the piece of writing.

At the end of a writing unit of study, the students had a celebration. They wore party hats, shared their stories in a circle and blew party horns to celebrate all the writing they have done. Of course, there were ice cream treats, too!

"I liked the party, because I liked blowing the horns. They make noise," Madeline said.

Students Jumpstart their reading

On Oct. 8, Linda Raasch, the librarian at Newman Catholic Elementary School at St. Mark Parish read the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle to the student body.

They joined the USO of Wisconsin and others around the country to break Jumpstart's world record for the number of children reading the same book on the same day. Jumpstart is a national nonprofit organization working to build literacy skills for preschool children. Its goal is to raise public awareness of the importance of developing early language and literacy skills.

In 2006, Jumpstart created its international campaign, "Read for the Record," to bring children and adults together to read the same book on the same day. The effort shows children the joy of reading and encourages them to keep reading as they grow.

Last year, about 700,000 people read on the same day. Jumpstart hopes to break that record this year by getting a million people reading.
