Pollywogs Bar and Grill opens today in Kimberly

Post-Crescent East

Steve Vetter and his wife Ronda — both Navy vets as well as pollywogs (Navy slang for a sailor who has never crossed the equator) — opened Pollywogs Bar and Grill today in Kimberly.

The new business is at 700 Schelfhout Lane, Suite C, in Kimberly. (920-423-3103) That’s the strip mall across County N from Kimberly High School.

They had a good time with the grill menu’s references to sea rations (appetizers), seaweeds (salads) and landlubber sandwiches.

The simple decor includes some navy and pollywog references, including flags and frogs.

In a bold step, they decided to start out nonsmoking.

“It’s coming in July anyway,” Vetter said of the July statewide smoking ban. “I don’t want people to be afraid to bring kids in here to eat pizza or burgers because of smoke. It is a bar, but it’s also a grill where you can bring your family for dinner.”

Note: the Friday fish fry does include frog legs, which do taste like chicken despite the warning not to say so on the menu.
