Column: Lions donate $1,500 to Boys and Girls Club

Pancake breakfast planned Sunday

NEKOOSA -- The Nekoosa Lions Club is pleased to announce the donation of $1,500 to the Nekoosa Area Boys and Girls Club.

The Boys and Girls Club has been so well-attended that it outgrew its old space and needed more room.

The Nekoosa Lions Club was this year's recipient of the "Lions Club Zone Project" money. For those of you who are not familiar with this, each year, regional Lions Clubs donate $250 to a Zone Project. Each year, the money goes to a different club and that club gets to designate where it would like the money to go. The Lions Clubs that make up our zone include: Nekoosa, Port Edwards, Wisconsin Rapids, Rudolph, Grand Rapids and the Wisconsin Rapids Lionesses Clubs.

In addition, the Lions Club has donated $250 toward the purchase of large-print materials for the Charles and JoAnn Lester Library. The use and need for large-print materials continues to grow every year, and the library is very appreciative of the Lions' continued support of the library.

The Nekoosa Lions would like to thank everyone who stopped by our food stand at Pumpkin Fest. We raised a lot of money, and as always, the funds we raise stay in the community for the benefit of our citizens. Thank you everyone for the positive comments regarding our new sandwich offering. It was nice for the head cook to hear all of the positive comments about the sandwich -- he's used to working behind the scenes.

The Club would also like to thank the Saratoga EMS volunteers for all their hard work, Connie Henke and the Nekoosa Schools, and Terry Schertz from Terry's BP Amoco for his generous donation, the Lions Club members and wives who came down to help on their own time, and especially Ron Young for all his legwork, and a special thanks to Bonnie Young for working while injured.

On Sunday, the Nekoosa Lions Club will sponsor an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at Humke Elementary School from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu items include buttermilk or potato pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, milk, juice and dessert. Tickets for ages 12 and older are $5 and children 12 and younger are $2.50. We hope to see you there.

If you are interested in what the Lions do for the community, feel free to join us at our meetings. We meet the second and fourth Monday of every month from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Nekoosa Retirement Community meeting room. To make arrangements or have questions answered, call any of the following members: Don Hustedt, 886-4279; Ron Young, 886-5854; or Herb Carlson, 886-5011.

Darla Allen is a Lions Club member and Nekoosa resident.
