Energy assistance applications accepted this morning

Applications for Wisconsin energy assistance will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon today at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, Centralia Center, Rapids Mall. The next application date is Nov. 11 at the Wood County Courthouse.

Applicants will be seen on a first come first serve basis. No appointments will be scheduled for the regular season applications during this time.

Applicants need to bring the following when applying for assistance:

  • Social Security cards for every person in household
  • Current fuel and electric bill
  • Proof of monthly income for three month preceding application date in the form of check stubs and wage statements; copy of check or direct deposit for Social Security or SSI; proof of self-employment (last year's taxes and self-employment worksheets) and/or proof of child support paid or received within the last three months
  • Proof of dividends and/or interest for previous 12 months

    Income guidelines for the 2008-09 WHEAP heating season:

    To qualify for the Energy Assistance Program, household income must be below 60 percent of the Wisconsin State Median Income. Gross income for the prior three months is used to determine eligibility (see chart below), and there is no asset limit. Eligible households will receive a one-time heating season payment to help pay heat and/or electric costs.

  • Family size: One person — $1,953; $5,859; $23,435
  • Family size: Two people — $2,554; $7,661; $30,645
  • Family size: Three people—$3,155; $9,464; $37,856
  • Family size: Four people — $3,756; $11,267; $45,067
  • Family size: Five people — $4,356; $13,069; $52,277
  • Family size: Six people — $4,957; $4,872; $59,488
  • Family size: Seven people — $5,070; $15,210; $60,840
  • Family size: Eight people — $5,183; $15,548; $62,192
  • Family size: Nine people — $5,295; $15,886; $63,544; and
  • Family size: Ten people — $5,408; $16,224; $64,896

    The one-time WHEAP payment is based on household income, number of rooms in the home, number of people in the household, type of fuel used and annual fuel usage.
