New London to hold children’s developmental screening event

Post-Crescent West

NEW LONDON — An interagency program created to educate families about typical child growth and development and resources available in the community will be held at Crystal Falls Banquet Facility.

New London’s annual Child Development Days will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 18 and 19 at the facility, 1500 Handschke Drive. The free event includes developmental screening for children ages 2 through 4, who live in the district.

Spanish interpreters will be on site. Early childhood teachers, speech and language therapists, school psychologists and nurses will be present to answer questions. Parents also may speak with representatives of agencies serving families.

Screening children at age 2 and 3, rather than waiting until they are closer to school age, allows earlier intervention when problems are found and a greater chance of success in helping children, according to the school district.

Child Development Days replaces kindergarten screening.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the event, even if they don’t suspect a developmental problem. Screening of all children is useful to the school district and other community organizations in developing plans for the community, based on the identified child care needs such as early childhood education and community-based programs for specific populations.

To schedule an appointment, call Linda between 7:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 920-982-8447 by Nov. 13.
