WRIGHTSTOWN — Lauren DeShaney finished with 20 kills, 10 digs and two blocks to trigger Xavier's 25-16, 25-21, 25-19 win over No. 1 Waupun in a WIAA Division 2 sectional final Saturday at Wrightstown High School.
Fourth-ranked Xavier buzzed through a squad that had won 11 of the past 16 Division 2 state titles with nine consecutive trips to State.
Instead, it's the Hawks who will get to take on Sauk Prairie on Friday at 4 p.m. in a state semifinal at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon with the winner advancing to next Saturday's championship.
The state bid is the Hawks' first since 2006 and fourth overall.
That's because the Warriors handed the Hawks a straight-set loss in last year's sectional final.
But this time around, Xavier built leads in each of the three sets – including a 10-1 start in the second — and also kept points alive by staving off a number of kill shots from an imposing front line led by senior outside hitter and Loyola University recruit Bridget Nickel.
Tears were also flowing on the other side of the gym as Waupun coach Keith Milkowski lamented on a night in which virtually nothing went right for his bunch.
"We got outplayed in every facet of the game, it's not hard to see that," he said. "They out-served us, they out-blocked us, they out-hit us. We weren't on tonight, and they were.
"We could never get over the hump. I give Xavier a lot of credit, they played well."
