State football roundup: Defense delivers Knox its first win

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Lloyd Scott returned an interception for a touchdown and Knox recorded a safety Saturday in its first win of the season, a 12-7 victory over Lake Forest.

The Prairie Fire (1-8, 1-7 MWC) took a 12-0 lead into the fourth quarter and held off the Foresters (2-7, 2-6).

Dan Carter hauled in a 17-yard pass from Geoff Sobey for Lake Forest.

Ripon 38, Grinnell 17

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Redhawks used a 24-point second quarter to put away the Pioneers (2-7, 2-6).

Ripon (6-3, 6-2) ran for 489 yards. Matthew Miller rushed for 146 yards and five touchdowns and TJ Pierce ran for 139 yards.

Mike McCabe passed for 352 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Monmouth 44, Illinois College 17

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Alex Tanney threw for 437 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Fighting Scots (9-0, 8-0).

Matt Shepherd and Nick Wright each caught 10 passes and combined for 297 receiving yards.

Michael Jennings caught 12 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown to lead Illinois College (5-4, 5-3).

Carroll 26, Lawrence 3

APPLETON — Chris Casper threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns to lead Carroll (4-5, 4-4). Tim Nass hauled in six passes for 165 yards and two scores.

Cody Robel connected on a 29-yard field goal for Lawrence (1-7, 1-7).

WIAC: UW-Whitewater 41, UW-Stevens Point 12

STEVENS POINT — The Warhawks rushed for 255 yards and cruised to the blowout victory.

Levell Coppage ran for 199 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns for Whitewater (8-0, 5-0 WIAC). Jeff Donovan threw for 178 yards and a touchdown.

Jared Beckwith threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns to lead Stevens Point (5-3, 4-1).

UW-Stout 35, UW-La Crosse 28

LA CROSSE — The Blue Devils (6-2, 3-2) ran for 302 yards on 45 attempts.

Ross Carey ran for 161 yards and a touchdown, and Craig Warminski added 128 yards and three scores.

Reid Oldenburg ran for 180 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries to lead La Crosse (5-3, 2-3).

UW-River Falls 31, UW-Platteville 28 (OT)

RIVER FALLS — The Falcons downed the Pioneers in overtime on a 30-yard field goal from Chad Blair.

Taylor Edwards ran the ball 24 times for 102 yards for River Falls (3-5, 1-4).

John Kelly led Platteville (3-5, 1-4 MWC) with 244 passing yards and two touchdowns.

UW-Eau Claire 44, UW-Oshkosh 35

OSHKOSH — David Goodman caught three touchdown passes for Eau Claire in a shootout win.

Kyle Paulson threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns for Eau Claire (4-4, 2-3), and Nate Ware threw for 358 yards and three touchdowns for Oshkosh (4-4, 2-3).
