75 Years Ago: 1934 Herman Wehausen, 40, and his son, William, 17, were killed Sunday evening when struck by a car while walking on Wisconsin 42 from Maplewood half a mile north to their home a short distance away. Another son, Herbert, 15, jumped to safety and was not harmed.
Joseph Knappen announced that he would be ready to open his new bakery in the building next to Hahn's furniture store on Nov. 5. The establishment will be known as Knaapen's Bakery, the same name it had during the 16 years Mr. Knaapen was in business in Algoma.
A new Girl Scout troop is being formed in Sawyer. Miss Jane Foelier will be in charge.
The Door County Chamber of Commerce will close its doors for the winter months. It is expected to reopen in May next year.
A warrant has been issues in the theft of more than 600 chickens from the Frank Zatlin farm in Jacksonport. Zatlin's partner and brother-in-law, Curtis Barnett, is suspected of taking the chickens — a theft of about $500.
Sheriff Alex Meunier has been kept busy lately with a rash of robberies and attempted robberies in the area. Lawrence Schlise's butcher shop in Forestville was robbed Thursday night. Thieves also broke into Sturgeon Bay High School and attempted but failed to break into the vault in the office of Supt. J.A. VanNatta. An attempt also was made to gain entrance into the Harry C. Lau Tire and Vulcanizing shop on Garland Street Wednesday night.
The big freighter Badger State arrived at the Tweles & Brandeis dock in Sawyer on Tuesday and loaded 55,000 cases of condensed milk from the Van Camp Milk Co.
George Draeb is celebrating his 30th year in the jewelry business in Sturgeon Bay with a special sale.
The steamer Fontana was in port Friday with 2,000 tons of lump coal for the Leathem Smith Coal and Shipbuilding Co.

100 Years Ago: 1909 The new bank at Forestville soon will be open for business.
The Forestville barn of William Hoffman was destroyed by fire on Friday.
Local merchants and dealers are preparing for what will hereafter be known as Market Day, to be held Nov. 19 and 20.
Henry Vetter of Gardner lost two barns and a granary, and August Schaefer of Sevastopol lost a large barn in the electrical storm Sunday evening.
Sawyer is peculiarly fortunate in that it has one of the greatest beds of gravel that can be wished for at the head of Union Street on land originally owned by the late John Sorenson. There is enough of this material to last for several generations, no matter what may happen.

125 Years Ago: 1884 The region was visited by the first heavy frost of the season last Wednesday night. During the day, we had our first snowstorm of the season.
Joseph Colignon is having the outside of his large new barn veneered with brick, and when completed, the structure will be the first one of its kind in the county.
John Kniskner last week made the trip from Baileys Harbor to Sturgeon Bay in just two hours and 45 minutes. This is pretty good time considering the current conditions of the road between here and there.
Up to this point, there has been nothing done to in the rescue of the schooner Christina Nilson, which has sunk to the reef near Baileys Harbor. The Nilson lies in about 16 feet of water and is loaded with pig iron, which will be no easy task to remove.
Adam Simon, one of the city's peddlers, says he has picked up and shipped about 25,000 pounds of paper rags out of this county during the past year.
