Washington Island celebrates Halloween

By Mary Marik

Friday night was a time for Washington Islanders young and old alike to celebrate Halloween.

Again this year, the Family Centers of Door County and the Washington Island Preschool teamed up to hold an annual fundraiser in the form of a giant Halloween party at Karly's.

Festivities began at 5 p.m., with food, refreshments and children's games. Adults helped out, and so did a lot of Island teenagers, who ran the games, decorated and did whatever was needed doing to make the party a success. The teenage volunteers received community service hours for their participation.

As a treat for teens in grades 7 through 12, including those who helped out at the party earlier in the evening, the Family Centers organized a follow-up party: a fondue dinner and scary movie that began at 7:30.

At the Halloween party, everyone could check out each other's costumes, bid on items in a silent auction and try to guess how heavy the giant pumpkin outside of Karly's was. The fondue party and movie were hosted by Katie McGrane, manager of the Mosling Recreation Center, and Hervy Hodges of the Family Centers.

CPR class

Cathy Mann, a registered nurse who is qualified as an emergency medical technician and who serves on the Washington Island Rescue Squad, will hold a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Heartsaver AED class from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Rec Center.

This class is suitable for people who have never done CPR before, as well as others who want to brush up on their skills. It includes instruction on the use of an automated external defibrillator.

The class is offered through Northeast Wisconsin Technical College; it is catalog No. 42531431. Registration can be made by calling (800) 422-NWTC or going to www.nwtc.edu.

Additional information is available at the Rec Center.

Parenting program

The first meeting of STAR (Striving Toward Awesome Relationships) Parenting will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. This is a free program for parents of infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

The program will begin with a family dinner at no cost to program participants. After dinner until 7:30 will be the first of a series of workshops designed to help parents recognize and build on their strengths while they learn about how to care for themselves in the process.

Margaret Foss, who teaches elementary school students at Washington Island School, and Laura Findlay Hagen, Island coordinator of the Family Centers, will be the facilitators. Child care will be provided.

This program is a collaboration of the Family Centers of Door County, the Rec Center, Washington Island Preschool and Washington Island School.

For reservations, call Laura Findlay Hagen at (920) 847-2679 by Sunday.
