Auditions ahead for 'Paintin' the Fence'

Theater for Young Audiences will hold auditions for its 21st-season musical, "Paintin' the Fence," Tuesday, Nov. 3 and Thursday, Nov. 5.

A cast of adults, teens and youngsters is needed to sing and dance in this family musical adventure based on Mark Twain's classic "Tom Sawyer." This version features favorite episodes such as whitewashing the fence, ghosts in the graveyard and lost in the cave.

Music director Dan Ognavic and stage director Deb Sabol-Williams will hold auditions by appointment at the Sheboygan Masonic Mansion, 411 St. Clair Ave., both nights from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The final audition slot is 7 p.m. both nights.

The following roles are available: (boys in grades five through nine) Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Sid Sawyer, Jeff Thatcher, Ben Rogers, Joe Harper, Jim Hollis, Ted Austin; (girls in grades five through nine) Becky Thatcher, Amy Lawrence, Lyda Hollis, Hope Austin, Suzie Harper, Sally Rogers, Faith Harper; (women and teenage girls) Mrs. Thatcher, Aunt Polly, Cousin Mary, Widder Douglas, School-mistress; (men and teenage boys) Doc Robinson, Muff Potter, Injun Joe, Judge Thatcher, Constable, Preacher; (boys and girls in grades three and four) four chorus roles as singing and dancing schoolmates and townsfolk.

Rehearsals will be held on weekdays in the early evenings from Nov. 16-Dec. 16 at the Masonic Mansion. Rehearsals will continue from Jan. 4 through Jan. 27 at the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Theatre. Daytime technical rehearsals will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 23 and 24.

School performances will be given Jan. 28 and 29. Public performances will be held Jan. 29-31. All performances will be held at the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Theatre.

All youth auditioning must live in or attend school in Sheboygan County or the Kiel School District.

Parental participation of five to eight hours per week is required of parents whose youth is cast in the musical.

Registrants will audition in 30- minute slots in groups of six to eight. All will be asked to sing, dance and read from the script. Callbacks by invitation will be held Friday, Nov. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Scripts are available for in-house review only at the Mead and Plymouth libraries.
