Greens ’N Grains, an Egg Harbor natural food store and delicatessen, launches “Dinner and a Movie” nights, starting Thursday, Nov. 5, and taking place every other Thursday.
“The intent is to provide an opportunity for people in Door County to see a collection of high quality art films — ones that would never get a screening in our local mainstream theaters — plus they get to enjoy ... natural and organic food from the deli,” said store founder Kathy Navis.
The opening film is actually a compilation of 60 60-second movies. “One Minute More,” featuring pianist Guy Livingston, has the minute-long films accompanying minute-long musical compositions by 60 composers from 23 different countries. The films include comic animations, docu-fictions, portraits, surrealism and abstract art films.
Livingston began more than 10 years ago with an idea he derived with a friend who wrote a 30-second opera, including costume changes. Then studying music at the Conservatory in The Hague, Livingston decided to invite all of the composers he knew to write a 60-second piece, with the Tennessee native offering a bottle of Jack Daniels as incentive. Well-known composers such as Louis Andriessen and William Bolcom are among those who took part.
Livingston traveled around the world performing his 60-second concert program and proved that he is as flexible a pianist as he is a theatrical talent. After striking the piano’s soundboard with a ball to create the final note in one of the pieces, he tossed it high into the air and caught it.
“It’s a piece about risk,” Livingston said. “You can’t drop the ball.”
To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the compositions, he invited filmmakers to make one-minute films to accompany the works.
For the “dinner” part of the event, the deli is offering a special of soup, salad, fresh-baked roll and tea for $6.50, with other options available, such as fruit smoothies, paninis, wraps, bakery and dessert specialties and coffee.
Greens ’N Grains is Door County’s only full-service natural food store, offering a complete line of groceries, healthy pet foods, environmentally friendly cleaning products, supplements and herbs, many locally grown and manufactured, including yak burgers.
The dinner special is available at 6 p.m., with the movie starting at 7 in the loft above the deli at Greens ’N Grains, 7821 State 42, Egg Harbor. Admission to the movie is free; there is a charge for food. For more information, call 868-9999 or visit greens-n-grains.com.
