Brand, Charles Arthur

Charles Arthur Brand, 90, Green Bay, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009.

He was born July 24, 1919, in Wausau, Wis., to the late Arthur and Margaret (Smith) Brand.

He was a graduate of Wausau High School and Maryville College, Maryville, Tennessee, and received his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin- Madison.

During World War II, he served three years in the U.S. Navy, graduating from Northwestern University Midshipman School and later was the Commander of a Minesweeper, which he decommissioned in Seattle after the war.

On Feb. 7, 1948, he married Mae Marquardt in Wausau; she preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 1994.

He married Roberta (Rathburn) Buckley on May 10, 1997.

Charles was an assistant professor at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, teaching ecology and conservation for three years, after which he spent 32 years as a pharmaceutical sales representative with Pfizer, Inc.

He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Sunday School teacher, as well as an elder and also clerk of the church session. He was vice president of the Southwest High School Booster Club and served a term as president of the Green Bay Board of Education. He served on the local Mental Health Board and also was elected to the Alumni Board of Maryville College for a three-year term.

Charles was active in the Nobel-Straubel Post #2037 Veterans of Foreign Wars in many positions, including local and district commander. He was president of the United Patriotic Society for five years and served on the executive committee for the planning and financing of the Admiral Flatley Park in downtown Green Bay.

Charles was a longtime Boy Scout leader, as well as local and district committeeman, a member of the Order of the Arrow and received the Silver Beaver award. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Washington Lodge #21, Free and Accepted Masons and the Scottish Rites Body. He was a member and past president of the Senior Optimist Club of Green Bay.

Charles is survived by his wife, Roberta; two sons, Jon (Liz) Brand, Green Bay and Richard (Olivia) Brand, Powell, Tennessee; one daughter, Kathlynn Galloway, Green Bay; three grandchildren, Carrie Galloway (Corey VanderLoop), Megan (Christopher Costine) Galloway and Tiffany Brand; two great-grandchildren, Aidan and William VanderLoop; a brother-in-law, Robert Wendorf; a sister-in-law, Lucille Omholt; nieces and nephews. He is further survived by Roberta's children, Eric (Luann) Buckley, Sheboygan; Ross Buckley, Watertown, South Dakota; and Carolyn (David) Regier, Ft. Worth, Texas; other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Mae, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jane Wendorf and Helen Savage.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at First Presbyterian Church, Ashland and Howard Street, where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ted Tromble officiating.
