SPARTA

The Stevens Point Area Retired Teachers' Association met Oct. 12 at The Sky Club, with 40 members present. The door prize was won by Robert Helgert.

Presenter for the event was Judy Steinke from the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups. Discussing "Medicare Fraud and Identity Theft," she urged members to "protect, detect and report" as errors or outright scams claim billions of Medicare dollars.

Members signed up for the fall used book sale, Oct. 28 to 31. Proceeds from the sale aid local charities, especially those related to educational or health issues. Members were informed about volunteer opportunities, including the Academic Decathlon at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Jan. 8.

Sessions on Power of Attorney for Health Care, a public service SPARTA provides, will be conducted at Lincoln Center on Nov. 6.

Six SPARTA representatives, Elbert Rackow, Robert Helgert, David Blado, Arvalea Crawford, Shirley Multhauf and Gerald Kasdorf, attended the Fall District III meeting in Madison on Oct. 23.

SPARTA invites retired educators and support personnel to attend the next meeting Nov. 9.

Grants approved were: $100 each to Central Wisconsin Reading Council Young Authors; Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin -- Green Circle; WREA Foundation; and Breast Cancer Research at the Marshfield Clinic (the favorite charity of the speaker).

4-H

Oct. 1, the Eager Eagles 4-H club held their monthly meeting. The club decided on a date to meet for lunch and go to a local corn maze. It also was decided that each family would donate items to be placed in a backpack for the North2Alaska project. For the history project next month, each member will do a report on a famous historical figure. After the meeting, Danielle and Tessa Wolosek gave a presentation on their baby bunnies.
