Oneida Nation Arts Board hands out awards across the area

Grants recognizing arts activities were given recently by the Oneida Nation Arts Board through the Dollars for Arts Program.
The grants were awarded to organizations and Oneida artists with funds provided by the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Oneida tribe.
The awards for fiscal 2010 were for excellence in art, artist development and artistic projects that benefit the Oneida community.
The recipients and their grant activities:
Kathleen Ann Thomas, $500 Oneida Artist Fellowship for excellence in contemporary baskets.
Ted Skenandore, $3,314 Artist Development Award to create a performance art/multimedia DVD.
Mary Valther, $1,156 Artist Development Award toward the creation and development of a community basketry guild.
Lawton Gallery, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, $2,162 Community Award toward a Native American art exhibit.
Oneida Nation High School, $1,474 Community Award for an Oneida documentary interviewing tribal elders.
Oneida Recreation, $1,454 Community Award for workshops/classes to make traditional Oneida clothes and cornhusk dolls.
Northeastern Wisconsin Dance Organization, $2,034 Community Award to provide tickets and busing for Oneida Nation Elementary School students to attend a morning performance, lecture and demonstration of the production of the "Green Bay Nutcracker Ballet" at the Meyer Theatre, plus a limited number of tickets to the scheduled evening and matinee performances to Oneida community members.
College of Menominee Nation, Green Bay campus, $2,085 Community Award toward the summer production of Native American theatrical works that will generate an interest in Native American theater and provide Oneida students attending the college with hands-on experience in creating theater productions.
Northeastern Wisconsin In-School Telecommunications and Cooperative Educational Services Agency 7, $5,017 Community Award for a documentary featuring Sondra Kelly, Metropolitan opera singer, mezzo-soprano and voice teacher giving a series of private voice lessons to Jennifer Stevens, an aspiring lyric soprano.
Grants are awarded in both traditional and contemporary styles of dance, literature, music, theater and visual arts. A peer panel rates applicants.
