WIAA cross country: Kiel boys, girls capture sectional titles, team trips to state

MAYVILLE — The Kiel boys and girls cross country team both punched their tickets to state by capturing WIAA Division 2 sectional championships in Mayville on Saturday.

The Kiel boys topped second-place Ripon 72-79 for the title behind Matt Scott in third at 17:23 and Andrew Maile in fourth at 17:53. David Ausloos was 10th at 18:13, Jacob Winkel was 22nd at 18:42 and Isaiah Grybush was 33rd at 18:56.

For Scott it is his fourth-straight trip to state. Lomira juniors Jon Luedtke and Joe Luedtke finished first and second, respectively in the sectional meet with Jon Luedtke edging Joe Luedtke by three tenths of a second.

The Kiel girls edged Mayville 64-75 for the sectional title and were paced by Samantha Platz, who took sixth at 17:02. Rosemary Mueller took 10th (17:13), Kristin Mathes was 12th (27:34), Alexis Genke was 15th (17:38) and Katie Engel rounded out the scorers in 21st (18:03).

Genke, a sophomore, will be making her second trip to state in as many years after qualifying as an individual last year.
