Evergreen Ice cream social a hit with families
Students, parents and staff members at Evergreen Elementary School recently gathered for pizza, hot dogs, chips, refreshments and ice cream.
An estimated 600 people were served dinner in the course of two hours. Students enjoyed bringing their families to school for dinner and dessert. Other attractions included visiting with the school mascot, Sparky the Eagle; face painting; and a basket raffle.
Students learn about fire safety
Students at Evergreen Elementary School celebrated Fire Prevention with a number of activities. The highlight of the week was a visit from the Kronenwetter Fire Department. The firefighters visited individual classrooms and grade levels to help build awareness about fire prevention and how to best react in the event of a fire.
A poster decorating contest gave students a chance to complete posters at home and return them to school for collection by the firefighters.
Throughout the week, students were engaged in a number of activities related to fire prevention. Kindergarten and first-grade students also were given tours of the fire and rescue equipment.
Riverside Students find math everywhere
Students at Evergreen Elementary School are having fun learning math concepts -- not just in the classrooms, but in the hallways, too.
This week, students in first-grade were learning about money, while second-graders practiced their math facts and learned what to do with number stories.
Some of the third-graders worked in the hallways on large sheets of paper creating "geometric cities." They had to design either a realistic or a fictional city that had multiple geometric components. Students incorporated concentric circles, obtuse and acute angles, tangent circles, trapezoids and other geometric figures.
The students said they had fun learning and getting to use their creativity.

NCES at St. Mark Students learn about the farm
By Diane Treu
Fourth-grade teacher
Fourth-grade students at Newman Catholic Elementary School at St. Mark Parish recently took part in the Future Farmers of America farm tour program. The farm tour is organized by area high school students who are members of FFA. The tour enhances the fourth-grade curriculum, which focuses on a year-long study of Wisconsin.
While at the Brian and Wendy Fust farm, students learned about farm machinery and safety, farm animals, milking, pet care, recreational vehicle safety and forestry.
At the end of the demonstrations, students enjoyed milk and cheese curds while being quizzed about their experiences during the tour. The day ended with a hayride.
The students said it was a fun way to learn about an important economic element of our community.
St. John Lutheran St. John celebrates families
We would like to welcome a new member of our St. John Lutheran School family. Megan Bahr will guide our kindergarten and first-grade classes on their learning adventures in Mrs. Benz's absence.
The future St. John class of 2024 grew by one Oct. 10, when Mrs. Benz had a baby boy, Paxton. Congratulations, and welcome to the family. Our school also grew by one student this past week. We want to welcome Larissa and her family to St. John.
This past week, we celebrated families and literacy at our first Family Fun Night for the 2009-10 school year. We had Reader's Theater presentations from Mrs. Zweck's and Mrs. Stuplich's classes. We played board games such as "Arthur Goes to the Library" and "Scrabble." We had all sorts of word puzzles, including Mad Libs, word searches and crosswords.
Mrs. Zweck's class displayed its literary elements, and we even had games of HORSE and PIG.
It was a great time celebrating families, both old and new, and of course, reading.
