Resolution to call for supervisors' pay cut

MANITOWOC — Jim Brey, Manitowoc County Board of supervisors chairman, will introduce a resolution at Monday's annual meeting of the board that the salaries of supervisors and chairman-chairwoman be cut by 5 percent for the first year of the next two-year term beginning April 2010.

Last week, County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer took an immediate 5 percent pay cut and challenged supervisors and other elected officials to do the same. Brey said that he and fellow supervisors Kevin Behnke and Norb Vogt have returned a portion of their pay.

Brey said if Ziegelbauer had stayed until the end of the Board's Oct. 15 meeting, "He would have heard me 'challenge' the County Board to take a 5 percent wage cut immediately and not wait until the next term to change the salaries."

Brey said taking a pay cut "in this time where we have all been touched by the recession, it is a gesture of team spirit. If we are going to survive this, we must do it together," he said.

Beginning April 2010, supervisors are scheduled to receive $237.50 per month and the County Board chairman $356.25 per month.
