Egg Harbor Town Board increases fee for Town Hall rental

Faced with a four-hour cleaning project Monday morning at the Egg Harbor Town Hall on County I — east of Carlsville — the Town Board voted Monday night to increase the cleaning deposit people have to pay to rent the facility for private parties.

The town had required residents who rented the community center to post a $50 cleanup deposit. But that changed after this past weekend.

Town Clerk Pam Krauel said the room, which doubles as the Town Board meeting room, was a mess Monday morning. "The floor is still sticky and it was cleaned twice," Krauel said.

Because it's a public building, state law prohibits smoking on the premises. "There were cigarette butts in the men's room sink. Nothing was picked up," Krauel said.

In addition, Krauel said nearby residents told her music for the Sunday night party wasn't turned off until 1 a.m. Monday. "They're supposed to have the place cleaned up and be out by midnight," Krauel said.

Krauel declined to name the person who had rented the hall Sunday, but said the person forfeited his or her deposit and will not be allowed to rent the facility in the future.

Town Supervisor Steve Schopf said he was upset with the condition of the room. "What this place looked like was uncalled for," Schopf said. "It didn't look like they cleaned up anything."

The board unanimously approved increasing the cleanup/damage deposit to $150 per event. "It's an incentive for people to clean up," Schopf said.

People who have already booked the room for future activities won't be charged the higher fee, Krauel said.

Krauel is also to contact the Door County Sheriff's Department so that officers on patrol can investigate any activity occurring at the town hall after midnight.
