10 Years Ago: 1999 A one-ton 45-foot periscope is ready to be installed in a permanent display at the Door County Maritime Museum as part of an exhibit on anti-submarine vessels built by area shipyards.
Lisa Whipkey is named the new director of the Peninsula Music Festival String Program.
The proposed Door County budget for 2000 will include about $900,000 more in spending while lowering the tax rate for the seventh straight year.

25 Years Ago: 1984 A well-known Sturgeon Bay musician became Door County's 11th traffic fatality of the year and the eighth in seven days. Timothy W. stone, 35, rural Sturgeon Bay, died instantly in a single car accident on Peterson Road in the town of Sevastopol after his car ran into a tree. Stone had just played in a jam session at the Scandia Supper Club for the Carroll Squier Memorial Band Shelter benefit.
William Bunda Jr. is Sister Bay's Citizen of the Year. The former village president and long-time community leader is still willing to lead a parade at the age of 86. He was honored at Sister Bay's Fall Festival. He bought Bunda's Store in 1920 from his mother. His father, Wenzel, opened the establishment in 1892 in the basement of the former Kwaterski apartment building.
Former Wisconsin Governor Lee Dreyfus was a judge of Egg Harbor's second annual Pumpkin Patch festival that attracted 30 entries. The winner was Dick and Greg Jansen's Blue Iris Restaurant with the theme "American Gothic." Cupola House was the runner-up.
Washington Island residents voted 136-103 to build a new school. The old school will be removed according to the 146-86 vote. The cost of the new school is expected to be $800,000.
The Sturgeon Bay School Board ratified a teacher salary agreement for 1984-85. The 7.9 percent overall hike includes raising the bachelor's degree base from $13,650 to $14,750.

50 Years Ago: 1959 Cherry growers left the annual meeting of Wisconsin Cherry Growers Inc. Monday night with a rosier outlook after being told that the almost complete mechanization of the harvest is right around the corner.
One of the worst rural fires in Door County history destroyed the Hugh Birdsall barn Tuesday morning in rural Sturgeon Bay, killing 16 animals.
Sturgeon Bay and the surrounding area turned out 1,000 strong at the open house aboard the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mesquite on Sunday. The Mesquite is replacing the Hollyhock in this area.
Fred Peterson piloted his 65-foot schooner Utopia into Sturgeon Bay Wednesday morning to end a three-year voyage around the world. The Utopia actually reached Sturgeon Bay at 2:20 in the morning but stayed outside overnight to return in style.
Real estate value in Door County has shown a minor increase during the past year, about half the increase reported last year. The slightly less than 1 percent increase amounts to about $800,000, bringing the total equalized value to $79,232,500.
