An Arpin man’s trip to the bank this afternoon ended with his car engulfed in a fire started from a surge in the vehicle’s ignition system, according to a fire official.
Bob Bidwell, 71, began to smell smoke inside his maroon-colored 1996 Cadillac, while it was parked shortly before 1 p.m. in the drive-thru of Associated Bank, 400 S. Chestnut Ave.
The Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department responded to a 911 call reporting smoke coming from a car. Upon arrival, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire after finding flames jumping out of the broken windshield.
No one was injured, according to Deputy Chief Roy Dolens, of the Marshfield Fire Department.
“I could smell hot wire, and it started smoking,” Bidwell said, watching as firefighters worked on the vehicle.
Deputy Chief Roy Dolens of the Marshfield Fire Department said the electrical panel continued to smoke, leading firefighters to conclude it began in the dashboard.
The car was in the lane closest to the bank, but the building was not damaged.
The 400 block of South Chestnut Avenue was closed for about 30 minutes, while the scene was cleared.
