75 Years Ago: 1934

  • About 125 unemployed workers met last week at Moeller's Hall and formed a permanent organization similar to what already is in operation in Green Bay and other cities.

  • The light wagon driven by Tommy Tong Jr. at the top of the hill west of the Borchert farms was struck by an Appleton salesman's car last Wednesday. Tommy suffered a badly cut lower lip but otherwise escaped serious injury. The horses were unhurt.

  • A fire of unknown origin started at the dumping ground southeast of the city of Ephraim Tuesday evening and had spread into the trees by the time the firemen were on the scene. The high wind threatened the efforts to the point that it created the concern that houses in the village might be lost. Fire Chief Al. Paschke quickly organized his firemen as well as volunteers, and the fire was held in check.

    100 Years Ago: 1909

  • Never before in the history of the country were so many autos marshaled in one body as last Thursday, when seven machines each laden with four passengers and the chauffeur left the city to convey the members of the State Road Commission to the northern section for the purpose of permitting them to inspect the main highways in that part of the county.

  • There was fun galore at Herman Hempel's in Sevastopol last Friday, on which occasion the new granary was taken possession of by a large number of the young people of the neighborhood. The Lily Bay orchestra furnished music for the dance.

  • Don Lavassor, Roy Lavassor and Cliff Greisen on Monday went to Beloit, where they have subsequently found employment.

  • Bingham Bros. has for some time been busy picking apples on the John Ryan orchard, and the better grade is bringing $2.75 a barrel.

  • Edward Ollinger and Henry Propsom on Saturday returned home from their remarkable canoe trip of 2,500 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.

  • Births: A son to Mr. and Mrs. Barney Haen.

    125 Years Ago: 1884

  • Capt. Casgrain's cranberry marsh produced 46 barrels of as fine berries as were ever grown anywhere.

  • The weather has continued so mild during the fall as to cause an unusual drain upon the resources of the ice dealers of the vicinity.

  • 1,200 Door County Republicans assembled and were treated to an address from John C. Spooner of Hudson.

  • It has been reported that a vessel, which has been identified as the schooner Lizzie Grant, has been discover capsized near Death's Door. It is also believed that the crew of four was lost in the event.

  • The storms of the last few days have broken the capsized schooner, Bessie Boalt, all to pieces and the debris is scattered along the beach at Two Rivers. The same heavy weather drove the barge D.R. Martin aground at the head of this bay.

  • George Kemp, 18, the oldest son of Matt Kemp, was killed in an accident in the upper mill Monday, when a stick of wood was thrown from a saw, piercing him in the neck.
