100 years ago — 1909 East River Valley Schoolhouse No. 5 of De Pere held its first classes Oct. 4. The schoolhouse is at Olde-School Square in Ledgeview.

Congress passed the prohibition enforcement bill, which barred the selling of all drinks, including beer containing more than 2½ percent alcohol.

Leland H. Joannes purchased the Payson Smith home on North Broadway for $22,500.
Ronald Coleman and May McAvoy were starring in "Tarnish" at the Strand.

65 years ago — 1944 The body of Wesley Struve, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter P. Struve, was recovered from Lake Michigan. He was killed when his plane crashed in the fog.
A special program was held at St. Francis church to celebrate the burning of the mortgage debt on the church property.
The American Legion announced plans to remodel its hall on Michigan Street.
Deaths — Henry Van Gemert, formerly of De Pere, at Walla Walla, Wash.; Mrs. Annie Broehm; Richard Vande Hei, five-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Vande Hei; Mrs. Walter E. Thew, the former Grace Vieaux of Wrightstown.
60 years ago — 1949 A survey of Wrightstown telephone users showed a large number favored the new program under which they would receive toll-free service to De Pere.
St. Norbert College planned the largest homecoming observance since pre-war days.

Alumni of St. Norbert College opposed the changing of the name of the school as proposed by Dr. Robert Christin. The De Pere Journal editorialized against a name change, and the De Pere City Council passed a resolution voting to keep the school named St. Norbert College.

25 years ago — 1984 Eight people were fined in De Pere municipal court for operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
De Pere's civic and religious organizations announced that they would spearhead this year's 100 percent vote drive.
Rick Urban and Sue Staszak were king and queen of the West De Pere High School homecoming. Members of the court were Birney Karau, Pam Shefchik, Lynn Krumpos, Paige Perock, Cheryl Forseth, Jill Jacobs, Tom Van De Hei, Peter Cabout, Mark Eiler, Wayne Everard, Chris Coffey and Wayne Metoxen.

20 years ago — 1989 Employees of Nicolet Paper Co. decided they will no longer be represented by Local 6288 of the United Paperworkers International Union after a recertification election was held. The decision was 316 against two votes for the union.
Volunteers were being sought to serve on a board to direct the application and, if approved, the implementation of the Main Street Program.

10 years ago — 1999 Golden K members Robert Cleven and Roy Patzke received national awards from March of Dimes. Both men were honored for their many years of volunteer work with March of Dimes, coordinating workers for the jail and bail program, Walk America, as well as processing direct mail for Northeastern Wisconsin on an ongoing basis.
West De Pere High School's girls volleyball team won its second straight Bay Conference title.
