The underdog Gillett girls won the Division 3 regional volleyball crown last Saturday, downing Bonduel, 25-19, 24-26, 20-25, 25-13 and 15-11.
Alaena Wocking with 24 kills and 7 blocks, Sam Stycznski with 19 kills and 7 blocks, Ali McQuillan with 23 assists and Shannon Schall with 19 assists and 7 digs paced the Tigers.
Gillett, in the semis, had upset second seeded Peshtigo, while Bonduel nipped top seeded Oconto.
The Tigers advance to the Division 3 sectional Thursday morning, hosting Manitowoc Roncalli, which defeated Packerland champ Sevastopol.
In the Division 3 regional final at Florence, Wabeno lost a hard fought 5 game duel to Wausaukee, 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 21-25 and 15-9. Wabeno had ousted Northern Lakes champ Florence in the semis.
In the Division 2 regional finals, Seymour halted Oconto Falls, 25-15, 25-12,16-25 and 25-17.
Nicole Garbrecht, Beth Rieth and Kirsten Schneider sparkled for the losing Panthers.
Regional semifinals
The Oconto girls successful season ended last Friday in a Division 3 regional semifinal loss against Bonduel.
The top seeded Devils lost a marathon duel to the Bears, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 20-25 and 15-13.
Danialle Bowen with 26 kills and Emilie Geurts with 15 kills and 32 digs were among Oconto’s standouts.
But in the other semi, Gillett upset second seeded Peshtigo, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18 and 26-24.
Alaena Wocking, Sam Styczinski were among pacesetters for the Tigers.
In Division 2, Dawn Larsen’s Oconto Falls reached the finals. Nicole Gardebrecht, Kali Opsahl, Beth Rieth and Sarah Dorow led the Panthers surge to the title game.
In Division 4, Wabeno upended Northern Lakes Conference champ Florence in 5 games, 13-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16 and 15-13, rallying from 2 games down for the win.
Regional first-round matches
In regional openers last Tuesday, Oconto, Oconto Falls, Gillett and Wabeno all advanced.
In Division 3, top seeded Oconto vanquished Menominee lndian, 25-11, 25-13 and 25-14.
Danialle Bowen, Emilie Geurts and Danielle Sherman paced the Blue Devils.
In Division 2, Oconto Falls swamped Marinette, 25-4, 25-8 and 25-7. Beth Rieth had 6 aces and 7 kills for the Panthers.
Also in Division 3, Gillett nipped Shiocton, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19 and 15-12. Sam Styczinski starred for the Tigers.
In Division 4, Wabeno easily halted Marinette St. Thomas, 25-7, 25-15 and 25-12.
But Lena bowed to N.E.W. Lutheran in Division 4, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-8. Becky Huberty paced Lena with 10 kills.
Suring lost a marathon to Stockbridge, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19 and 15-13.
Brittany Thomas, Heather Heimerl, and Miranda Cook were the pacesetters for the losing Eagles.
