Prep football: Athens makes school history with first playoff win

Wausau Daily Herald

FLORENCE -- The Athens Bluejays made the three-hour trek to Florence for its WIAA Division 7 Level 1 playoff game Tuesday.

And it was worth every mile.

The No. 7-seeded Bluejays (6-4) erased an early 14-point deficit and went on to a 35-21 win over No. 2 seed Florence for the school's first football postseason victory in its existence.

Junior Cam Diedrich scored three times for the Bluejays, including a Desmond Howard Super Bowl-like moment from the Green Bay Packers win over the New England Patriots in 1997.

Florence, which finished 6-4, had just tied the game at 21 in the third quarter, but on the ensuing kickoff Diedrich shifted the momentum back to the Bluejays' sideline with a riveting 88-yard return for a score.

Andy Ellenbecker also had a big night for the Bluejays, running for two scores and throwing for two more.

Ellenbecker finished 17 for 28 for 214 yards, with his top target being Diedrich, who caught 10 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bluejays trailed 14-0, before Ellenbecker connected with Diedrich for a 18-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Ellenbecker then ran in touchdowns from 4- and 1-yard out to make it 21-14 in the third quarter.

Florence came back, though, to tie it, setting up Diedrich's dramatic moment and the Bluejays added a third score in the third quarter to make it 35-21.

Brock Guralski led Athens in rushing with 131 yards on 24 carries.
